Blackheath Westcombe Ward Labour Party

Welcome to the Blackheath Westcombe branch of the Labour Party. We’re a lively and friendly branch, one of seven in the constituency of Greenwich and Woolwich; we’d like the branch to be your route to participation in the Labour Party locally and nationally. We meet every month to share information and talk about politics. Meetings give us the chance to learn from each other and guest speakers, and an opportunity to work together on campaigns and on furthering the ideals which brought us together.

Who does what

Chair. Roy Preston
My job is to chair the regular meetings of the branch and to make sure that everyone who wants to make a contribution is heard. I have been a member of the Labour Party for 55 years and was a Greenwich councillor for 12 years where I experienced how Labour policies could make a positive difference to peoples’ lives.

Secretary. Jo Van den Broek
This role is about communication: not just organising meetings and papers and keeping in touch with members (let me have an email address if you can!), but also making sure that information and ideas pass both ways between the branch and the constituency party. My working background is in finance and HR for a national organisation of local councils. I’ve lived in the borough most of my life and been in the Labour party since the 80s, though only an active member for the last couple of years.

The branch campaigns both to increase Labour representation locally and nationally, and to put Labour values in practice at the local level – whether that means doing practical things to improve the environment, campaigning to improve affordable housing or to protect local public services. We’re talking to members and supporters about the issues that matter most to them. Rita and Sue organise the delivery of labour party literature to deliverers within specific areas of the ward. The literature may range from notices of meetings and regular newsletters from our local Labour councillor to all the mail involved in an election. We always welcome volunteers to deliver.
